What is Panchakarma (PK)?
Panchakarma, which in Sanskrit stands for five therapeutic actions, is Ayurveda’s most revered and effective purification and detoxification treatment for body, mind, and consciousness. It is the cornerstone of Ayurveda’s cleansing and rejuvenating programs.
Although the therapeutic measures may appear quite simple, its effects are extremely powerful to the point that Ayurveda considers it necessary before the beginning of any other therapy. The logic behind this is that the body needs to be cleansed from all impurities before being exposed to a rejuvenation program, just as you would do with any garment before dying it with a new color or a piece of furniture before being polished.
Panchakarma, is meant to purify the whole body by eliminating the accumulated toxins from it. It is also believed to have a rejuvenating effect when it is subject to a healthy person. During Panchakarma, we use internal and external oleation to dislodge toxins from all cells and tissues and bring them to the digestive track. Once at the digestive track, we eliminate them through specific techniques, either Basti (medicated enemas) or Virechana (purging through herbs). Nasya (nasal administration of oils) may also be used for elimination of impurities in the head region.
Panchakarma is always performed in three stages: Purva Karma (pre-treatment), Pradhana Karma (primary treatment) and Paschat Karma (post-treatment).
Panchakarma is a unique, natural, holistic treatment that cleanses the body’s deep tissues of toxins, opens the subtle channels, and brings energy thereby increasing vitality, inner peace, confidence, and well-being. It is recommended on a seasonal basis, as well as when an individual feels out of balance or is experiencing illness.
What makes it different from other detox programs?
While most detox programs are designed to cleanse only the digestive system, Panchakarma targets ALL cells in the body, making it a very thorough and scientific method. It is always customized to each individual, taking into account the client’s goals and any imbalance already present in the body or mind.
What are the effects of Panchakarma?
By getting rid of the toxic load that we normally carry, the immune system is able to regain its ability for self-healing, which may translate into more power to fight allergies, skin rashes, digestive issues, and many other imbalances. It also helps cleanse the mind, bringing more inner peace and facilitating the communication with our true nature.
So, it is only advisable for specific imbalances?
No, even healthy individuals will greatly benefit from this practice as it reverses the negative effects of stress and can help cells rejuvenate at all levels. Remember that Ayurveda was born as a science of rejuvenation.
Are there any contraindications?
Some strength is required as no detox program should be administered to a very weak person. Other than that, PK is not recommended for pregnant women, kids, or the very elderly.
What is Home Panchakarma?
Home Panchakarma is a lighter version of the Panchakarma treatment normally performed in Ayurvedic clinics and retreats. Home PK has been designed for those individuals who would like to benefit from a PK program but do not have the time or financial means to travel to a dedicated institution.
During Home PK, your practitioner first meets with you to evaluate your condition and goals and customize a personalized detox program. A starting date will be chosen and you will be doing your PK at home for the agreed duration (normally 7 to 14 days). The practitioner will be available for phone assistance during the duration of the program. At the end of PK, you will meet again to evaluate results. We will also design a personalized diet, lifestyle recommendations, and a rejuvenation program.
Is there a simpler way of detox using Ayurveda?
Yes, for people who don’t have the time or don’t feel comfortable with the Panchakarma process, we can offer a simpler form of detoxification using herbal compounds and diet. This will target the digestive tract instead of the whole body but will also be quite effective in cleansing your stomach, intestines and adjunct organs of digestion.
What about rejuvenation?
Rejuvenation is one of the main branches of Ayurveda. It is known as Rasayana and involves four different aspects:
1- Diet: Diet has to follow your constitution and time of the year and must consist of fresh, highly nourishing foods.
2- Lifestyle: Also consistent with your constitution. It involves sleep and eating patterns, exercise, relaxation, etc
3- Mindful living: Includes living an ethical life, living in harmony with the environment, being mindful, and practicing meditation
4- Herbology: We offer a potent combination of seven herbs that will help you boost your immune system, help you adapt to stressful conditions, fill you with energy, and allow your cells to prevent oxidation and other decaying processes.
